Newfound Freedom. Sort of...

We have a wonderful, paved, township-owned path adjacent to our house that includes a 0.5-mile loop through the woods. You can pretty much count on seeing us out and about on the path on any given day.

It provides some nice shade during the heat of summer. So, while training for a half-marathon (my first in about 11 years!!), I do my short (4 mile) weekday runs by doing laps around the loop. Colden has become my "pacer" by riding his bike in front of me.

About a week ago, I told Colden that he could go around the loop and catch back up to me (so long as he promised to stay on the loop, not stop and not talk to any people). "Really, mom?...are you sure?" I had to reassure him several times that I would continue along the loop and that we would bump into each other if he rode the opposite way that I was running. "OK - here I go!"

Colden's first taste of freedom...and my first lump in my throat for letting him go totally unsupervised!!

I think he pedaled as fast as he possibly could, and I got the sense that he was hyperventilating (ever so slightly) as I got out of sight. Needless to say, we successfully reunited about 2.5 minutes later (a long 2.5 minutes for both of us!).

He has done several solo loops since. I love that he still manages to sneak one last peak before disappearing around the corner.

(You can barely make out the little blue speck speeding away down the path)

(one last peak before going out of sight)

(Loop completed...successful reunion...happy/proud boy)

6.5 years old with the newfound freedom of being able to fly solo for a grand total of 2.5 minutes. Best. Feeling. Ever.

Speaking of growing up...my 2 babies are mastering the art of showering! I believe the days of baths are numbered.

My loves.

Don't let their smiles fool you...this very quickly turned into this:

Which then quickly turned into some time outs. :-P

Colden's Kindergarten Graduation

Life is moving along quickly...almost too quickly. Colden graduated from kindergarten today!

When snuggling with Colden at bedtime tonight, I asked him how he felt about graduating. He said, "I almost feel like crying because I worked so hard...I learned so many words and did so much math. Now I'm done with kindergarten and I got so many treats. I just can't believe it."

I can't believe it either.

To celebrate his graduation, we took him to Chuck E Cheese (his favorite arcade place), went to his favorite restaurant (Uno Pizzeria), and got him a new video game. Nanny and Grandpa also came in for his graduation and showered him with new chapter books (man this kid can read!!).

Here are some pictures of his graduation:

Walking down the aisle to the "stage"

Hang in there kiddo. Good thing there were only about 15 kids in your class and your last name is in the middle of the alphabet. Just wait until your next graduation...you may have to sit a little bit longer.

Reese taking notes for when it's her turn in a few years. But, no rush.

Receiving his diploma from his kindergarten teacher, Miss Val. So proud!

This "I'm too cool for school" image magically transported me about 12 years into the future where I see a similar scene, but perhaps with some beach balls floating around and a little more bling on the caps.

You did it, mister! School's out for summer!

Colden is the one on the left in the back row (black and white striped shirt)

And...not to embarrass him, but here is a peak at Colden's first crush: Gianna (or "GiGi", as he lovingly calls her).

He was helping her get her hair out of her face (love!!)

In my head: from graduation to prom. Stop. I need my 6-year-old baby back.

CONGRATULATIONS Colden on working your butt off, graduating kindergarten and making us so proud!
